John Vigar`s CHURCHES IN SOUTH WALES TOUR 2023

Monday April 24th to Thursday April 27th 2023

Join us for a tour exploring a wide variety of churches. Staying at the Iconic Angel Hotel opposite Cardiff Castle Hotel on a DBB basis. The tour starts and ends at Cardiff Central Station at 1.30pm.

 

ROATH, ST MARGARET
Stunning Victorian church built by Lord Bute as his family mausoleum. Colourful interior. Glass by Burlison and Grylls and altar by Comper

ROATH, ST GERMAN
Bodley designed church of great renown. 1881. `Strong, lithe and thin`.

LLANDAFF CATHEDRAL
Victorian rebuild of much altered structure. Full of interesting treasures.

PENARTH, ST AUGUSTINE
An impressive Butterfield church with his usual polychromy.

LLANCARFAN, ST CADOC
The best wall paintings in Wales, only recently discovered and conserved.

MICHAELSTONE LE PIT
Medieval pulpit. Fourteenth century church, 3 decker pulpit.

ST ANDREW MAJOR
Fifteenth century remodelling of an earlier church.

WENVOE ST MARY
Good monuments from 18/19c, Comper reredos. Unusual building history.

ST FAGAN, ST FAGANS
Most important 14th century work in Wales. Restored by Street in 1859

ST TEILO, NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WALES
Saved church rescued from St Teilo, Tal y bont. Interior reconstructed as an ideal medieval church.

EWENNY PRIORY
Norman monastic church. Fine medieval monuments of national importance.

LLANMIHANGEL, ST MICHAEL
Saddleback tower, wind braced-roof, monuments.

LLANTWIT MAJOR, ST ILLTYD
The largest church in Glamorgan. Early crosses, wall paintings. 

MARGAM ABBEY
Small part of Romanesque structure. Post medieval monuments. We will also visit the pre-Conquest carved stones museum with 6c-11c funerary sculpture.


ST DONAT`S
Picturesque medieval church below the more famous castle.


LLANFRYNACH, ST BRYNACH
Unrestored and atmospheric.

PENMARK, ST MARY
Large village church with unusual architectural features.

 

Cost of the tour is £725 per person and includes Dinner, Bed and Breakfast for 3 nights and all coach travel to and from Cardiff Central Station. A deposit of £95 per person is required to secure your place.
